Beginner Insights: How to Begin Your Tarot Journey with Confidence

Colorful spiritual woman, third eye is jewel

Learning tarot can be a fun and transformative experience, but knowing where to begin can feel overwhelming. With countless decks, spreads, and interpretations, it’s easy to feel lost.

Don’t worry!

This blog post is here to help you navigate your first steps into the world of tarot with confidence and clarity, ensuring you have a solid foundation.

Understanding the Basics

Before diving into readings, it’s important to familiarize yourself with the structure of a tarot deck. A traditional tarot deck consists of 78 cards divided into three main sections: the Major Arcana, the Minor Arcana, and the Court Cards.

The 22 cards of the Major Arcana represent significant life events and spiritual lessons, while the 56 cards of the Minor Arcana focus on everyday experiences and challenges, divided into four suits (Cups, Wands, Swords, and Pentacles). The court cards (Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings) represent personalities and people in tarot.

I teach a system of assigning each card keywords, and labeling your keywords on your cards. After you have completed that it’s important to spend time understanding your relationship with each keyword (thus your relationship with each card.)

Remember, tarot is as much about intuition as it is about knowledge. Allow yourself to connect with the imagery and symbols on the cards.

Developing Your Intuition

Tarot is a powerful tool for accessing your intuition and inner wisdom. To enhance your intuitive abilities, practice mindfulness and meditation regularly. These practices help quiet the mind and open the channels for intuitive insights. When you draw a card, take a moment to reflect on its imagery and symbolism before consulting the guidebook.

What emotions or thoughts arise?

What aspects of the card stand out to you?

Trust your initial impressions and allow your intuition to guide your understanding.

Keeping a tarot journal can be very helpful. Record your readings, insights, and any patterns you notice over time. This practice not only strengthens your intuition but also deepens your connection to the cards.

Practicing Patience and Consistency

Like any new skill, learning tarot requires patience and consistent practice. Start with simple one-card pulls to gain confidence and gradually move on to more complex spreads. Dedicate a few minutes each day to your tarot practice, whether it’s pulling a daily card, meditating with a card, or studying the meanings.

Remember, there’s no rush. The journey of learning tarot is as important as the destination. Be kind to yourself and celebrate your progress along the way.
