STOP Memorization and Start Building a Relationship with Your Tarot Cards

STOP Memorization and Start Building a Relationship with Your Tarot Cards

Woman reading tarot - text reads "stop memorization and start building a relationship with your tarot cards"

Are you learning tarot but finding it difficult to memorize the cards?

When I first started, I felt frustrated by the endless effort to remember each card's meaning. After months of struggling, I decided to label one of my decks with keywords, and it completely transformed my practice!

Starting a journey with tarot cards can feel overwhelming if you only focus on memorizing their meanings. Building a relationship with your cards can lead to a more intuitive and enriching experience. Here are three easy steps to help you understand and connect with your tarot deck on a deeper level.

Step 1: Choose Your Study Deck

Choosing the right tarot deck for your study deck is the first step to forming a meaningful connection and to stop memorization. The deck should be suitable for a beginner and have graphical accurate depictions on every card.

Start by selecting a deck that speaks to you. This deck should feel like a natural extension of yourself, one that inspires and excites you each time you hold it. Look for a deck that aligns with your personal aesthetic and emotional resonance.

When you find a deck that you feel drawn to, it becomes easier to connect with the images and symbolism, making your readings more intuitive and personal. Your study deck will be a tool and companion on your tarot journey.

Step 2: Label Your Study Deck With Powerful Keywords

When you are relying on books and guidebooks for the meanings of your cards, it can feel unclear and overwhelming. Having relevant keywords that will work in any situation and resonate with you can help you cut through the noise and read clear messages. Most of my students in the High Priestess Tarot School put a small piece of washi tape on each card, then label the card with an ultra fine tip sharpie. This preserves their cards as the washi tape can be easily removed at a later date. You could also write on the border of your card and remove the border later, still others just write directly on each card.

Step 3: Start Your Readings

Once your deck is prepared, it’s time to dive into practice. Start with straightforward one-card pulls to familiarize yourself with the card’s energy and your intuitive responses. Gradually experiment with more complex spreads as you gain confidence. Use the keywords you’ve added to guide your interpretations, but remain open to the intuitive insights that arise during your readings. Approach each reading with a sense of curiosity rather than pressure.

Remember, the goal is to build a personal and meaningful relationship with your cards, so enjoy the process and embrace the learning journey.

By following these steps, you'll begin to build a meaningful relationship with your tarot cards, enhancing your intuitive abilities and interpretive skills, and deepening your understanding of your deck.
