Tarot's Key Elements: How Major Arcana, Minor Arcana, and Court Cards Reveal Your Journeys
Tarot is a useful tool for introspection, insight, and guidance, but at its core, it’s also a deeply symbolic system with various layers of meaning. Each card in the tarot deck holds its own unique energy, and when they come together in a reading, they offer a profound reflection of a person’s life, emotions, and experiences.
Today, we’ll explore the three main elements of the tarot deck: the Major Arcana, Minor Arcana, and Court Cards, and how each contributes to a greater understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
The Structure of the Tarot Deck
The tarot deck is divided into two primary sections: the Major Arcana and the Minor Arcana. The Major Arcana consists of 22 cards, and the Minor Arcana includes 56 cards, which are further divided into four suits—Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles.
Within the Minor Arcana, we also have the Court Cards, which add another layer of depth to the reading. Each of these components plays a distinct role, contributing to the holistic nature of tarot readings. Together, they offer a comprehensive map of both our inner world and external experiences.
The Major Arcana: Life’s Big Lessons
The Major Arcana, spanning from The Fool to The World, represents the major events and life lessons that shape a person’s journey. These cards reflect the turning points and transformative moments we encounter along our path. When a Major Arcana card appears in a reading, it signifies significant shifts or milestones, indicating that the querent is navigating a key life chapter.
For example, pulling The Tower may represent a sudden upheaval or change, while The Lovers might speak to themes of significant commitments. Major Arcana cards often carry a sense of destiny, encouraging us to look beyond the everyday and pay attention to the deeper, more meaningful cycles in our lives. These cards remind us that we are constantly growing, evolving, and learning.
The Minor Arcana: The Day-to-Day Journey
In contrast, the Minor Arcana deals with the smaller, day-to-day aspects of life. These cards provide a snapshot of what is happening in the present moment—how we’re feeling, perceiving the world, and reacting to our circumstances.

Even without a deep understanding of the card’s specific meanings, you can glean valuable information by observing the suit, numerology, and elemental associations.
The Court Cards: People and Personality
The Court Cards—Pages, Knights, Queens, and Kings—add another dimension to tarot readings by representing people, personality traits, or stages of development. Each suit in the Minor Arcana has its own set of Court Cards, and they embody various aspects of creation, growth, and mastery.
These cards can often describe the people involved in a situation or reveal qualities that the querent is being asked to embody. For instance, the Queen of Cups may represent someone nurturing and empathetic in the querent’s life, or it might be inviting them to adopt a more emotionally attuned approach to a situation. The Court Cards allow for deeper character analysis, offering valuable insights into how personalities and roles interact in the context of a reading.
